Micro Tiny Home on Wheels

Okay, this home is definitely NOT intended for full time living. It is very cute and well organized with all the essentials - well maybe not all, there is no toilet or shower facilities.

It is a customized travel trailer that is being used by a man named Frank from NC who is a traveling carpenter.  He tows it from one place to another so he doesn't have to stay in hotels, just like any other travel trailer/motor home enthusiast.

Myself, I would be pulling it to Corpus Christi, Texas in the winter; Ruidoso, New Mexico in the summer; Arkansas in the fall.

A Green Tiny Home

Even more important to me than my fascination minimal living and tiny homes is the wise use of our environment - Green Living.

I found a tiny home in France that used only local products to build it with. Plant fibers were chosen to insulate with. The ventilating and cooling are passive.  The owners have opted for solar collectors on the hill behind them, collect rain water and also utilize geothermal energy.  Honestly, the only thing missing is a green roof or wall, but they have a green hill right behind them.

You would think that the house's streetscape might be "dumpy", not a chance.  The interior is also modern and well designed and furnished.  The size of this home does not detract from its beauty at all.

Tiny House without a Sleeping Loft

This new tiny house design is by Humble Homes.

For the retiree who wants to downscale to a "tiny home", but is not interested in climbing a ladder to sleep in a loft, this new design really thought outside of the box, how be it, a tiny box, but it provides the user with a living space, kitchen, bathroom, and a side entrance.  Follow the link below and you can view a short video to see the interior in 3D.  Is this a design you would consider for a retirement home?  How about a home for your GenY child who is off to college?

Tiny Transition Downsizing e-Course

I received several responses to my blog about tiny home/cottages in Iceland.  Many of you said you would love to take a trip there, however, more of you said you just couldn't imagine living in such a small space with that much less.  One person mentioned the lack of storage space, and doing without a washer and dryer.

My favorite, commercially constructed, tiny house actually has stairs (which provides extra storage) and a full size washer and dryer designed into it.  You can find it on the Tiny Green Cabin's website: http://www.tinygreencabins.com . The plan I am in love with is the Wildflower II Base Plan.

Storage issues, storage is tucked into all tiny homes in normally unused spaces, but in this plan the steps to the sleeping loft, shown at the right, have small drawers added in the rise.

Of course, you have to adopt a minimalist mind set to make it work. That is really harder than you might think, since living minimally is in direct opposition to what we have been raised to believe is a sign of success in main-stream America.

But enough of my ranting, there is an e-course available for any of you really serious about downsizing, de-cluttering, and choosing to live minimally. http://tinyhouseblog.com/announcement/tiny-transition-downsizing-e-course/  is a place to begin.

Blue Moon Rising

The name Blue Moon Rising appealed to my sense of adventure, and when I opened their website I found that their overnight facilities were "tiny homes/cottages".  Imagine that!  I am sure Google has me tagged as a tiny house enthusiast - the reason I keep running across these really cool sites and blogs.

I will probably never get up to Maryland to visit this establishment and their retreat facilities or have the enjoyment of participating in their Art, Nature, Wellness, and Sustainable Practice programs - but I sure have the "want to".

In the mean time and I going to promote this oasis in the Maryland forested area to those who might have the opportunity.  If you have a question or want to learn more you can reach them at:

Blue Moon Rising
89 Blue Moon Rising Way
McHenry, MD 21541

Make sure you let them know how you learned about their unique organization.

Tips for Decorating Small Spaces

My favorite topic these days is "tiny homes" and "small spaces".  Decorating a small space can be a challenging task, but using the tips I have provided below can help you get started in the right direction.

1. Provide enough storage.
Try to find furnishings that will give you multi-function capability for your small space. You can even find chairs and ottomans that have storage areas inside of them. Just lift up the top and there you will find space for blankets, pillows or other items.

2. Use containers to hide clutter.
Buy wicker baskets or steamer type trunks to store out-of-season clothing, linens and towels. They will look great and contain all of those small items that make a room look cluttered.

3. Use mirrors to reflect the light.
A large mirror or several small mirrors placed strategically can make a small space feel lighter and larger. If you like a more modern style of decorating, furniture and tables with metal or glass
can visually expand the space.

4. Don’t block the light.
Covering every window with blinds and draperies can make a small room feel dark and crowded. Leave windows bare or only cover with sheer draperies to let the light shine through. Light always makes a space seem larger.

5. Place furniture in rooms.
Try to create specific areas for specific activities. Put a bed and dresser in one area for the bedroom and a sofa and coffee table in another area. Having your apartment furnishings put any-old-way can make it cluttered and uninviting. You might have to leave out the bed and use a sleeper sofa, Murphy bed, or another type of concealed bed application if your apartment is super-small.

6. Create a focus.
If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace, accentuate it. Even if you don’t have a natural focal point, create one. Painting just one wall a different color will draw the attention into the room and make it seem bigger. Put a large credenza or entertainment center on that wall and decorate it with beautiful accessories. Play up any view that will bring the outside in.

7. Use dividers for larger apartments/spaces.
You can find beautiful dividers in both thrift shops and high end furniture stores. Use them to enclose various areas of your space. I saw an episode on HGTV where they used four beautiful wooden dividers to make a separate bedroom. It not only provided a private sleeping area, but also created another wall on which to place furniture and art.

8. Keep clutter at bay.
When you have a small area, clutter is not an option. Too many knick-knacks and too much or furniture that is too big can visually and physically crowd a space. Keep your necessary items, such as extra bed linens put away in a dresser or wicker baskets. Kitchen counters should be kept clean with everything in the cupboards if possible.

9. Another trick for a small space is to buy furniture with legs and that are higher off of the floor.
Your eye will look under these pieces of furniture and add visual space. Furniture that is
blocky and low to the ground makes a room appear more crowded.

10. Paint with lighter colors. You don’t have to use white, but using paint colors that are lighter in color expands a space more than dark colors.

HVOLL Cottages in Iceland

These particular cottages are meant to be used as a "travel destination" to watch the northern lights in the winter or explore the famous Eyjafjallajökull, the glacier mountain that erupted in 2010, or the Mýrdalsjökull glacier; and in the summer - you can do it on the back of an Icelandic Pony.

For me (even though I would love to take a vacation there) the draw of these cottages is how they could be re-purposed for full time living for the thousands of Americans who are wanting, or having to downsize their current living arrangements.

Let me hear your thoughts on living tiny, on purpose, as an alternative to the current McMansion way of life in the U.S.

Downsizing Help

Before I begin this post, I just want to tell you that  I am crazy about the website www.houzz.com.  If you haven't been there take time to browse through it; for me it is addicting as Pinterest.com.

This week on www.houzz.com there is an article about downsizing your home. When you are ready to downsize, what furniture do you keep and what do you get rid of?  One of first things to do is measure, measure, measure - your furniture and the new place you will be moving into.

For your convenience, the link is below:

Hope you enjoy the article.  Let me know if this was helpful.
